The New Front Line in Utility Cybersecurity: What Municipal and Cooperative Utilities Need to Know

Cybersecurity used to be primarily about protecting data centers and email inboxes. But today, the threat landscape has shifted—now, the front lines are at the network edge. A recent report found that 30% of cyberattacks now start at the network edge *—targeting things like VPNs, firewalls, and routers.

For municipal and cooperative utilities, that’s a serious red flag. These edge devices are often the first line of defense, especially in systems with remote substations and distributed assets.

If they’re outdated or misconfigured, they become easy targets. And for smaller utilities —where IT teams are lean and resources are stretched—this shift in attack strategy is something not to ignore.

Why the Network Edge Is Now the Front Line
Hackers are getting smarter. Instead of relying on phishing emails or flashy malware, they’re going after the infrastructure that utilities depend on every day. They’re exploiting weak passwords, skipped updates, and aging hardware—things that are all too common in the utility space.

And let’s be honest: many are still running legacy systems. That makes it harder to keep up with evolving threats. But the risks—service disruptions, data breaches, and reputational damage—are just as real for larger utilities.

Thinking Smarter About Cybersecurity
At Trilliant, we work closely with municipal and cooperative utilities to provide the flexibility you need for the unique challenges you face. That’s why cybersecurity is built into everything we do—it’s not an afterthought.

Analytics as a Service: Intelligence with Security Built In
One of the most impactful tools we offer is Analytics as a Service. It’s a cloud-based platform that helps any size utility:

Detect anomalies in real time

Prevent non-technical losses

Stay compliant and protect data integrity

It’s built on trusted industry standards like NIST, ISO, and FedRAMP, and it’s designed to give you visibility across your network. From encrypted data flows to secure multi-tenant architecture, security is layered in from the start.

Why AMI Modernization Matters Too

Modernizing your Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is another critical step. Older meters and endpoints often lack the security features that are needed today. Upgrading to modern AMI systems means encrypted communications, stronger authentication, and centralized monitoring. This not only helps you detect threats faster—but it also shrinks the attack surface hackers can exploit.

What Can Utility Leaders Do Right Now?

Here are a few steps we recommend:

Audit your edge devices – Are your VPNs, routers, and firewalls up to date?

Strengthen credentials – Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication.

Update your AMI and/or invest in smart analytics – Trilliant can help you spot issues before they become problems.

Talk to your IT team – Or if you are the IT team, make cybersecurity a top priority.

Cyber threats aren’t going away—but with the right tools and mindset are necessary to stay ahead of problems.

At Trilliant, we’re here to future-proof your utility or smart city in a connected world.

Contact us today, and let’s talk about how we can support your utility’s cybersecurity journey.

————————————————

By Greg Myers

Electricity demand compared to last year has increased due to factors such as fluctuations in supply and price, weather patterns, aging grid capacity and infrastructure, and/or overall growing demand from growing urban areas, data centers and AI, and industrial activity.

For utilities looking to manage the change in loads and help customers manage their usage, analytics programs can help optimize various operational processes through data-driven insights, improving overall efficiency and productivity.

Combined with machine learning algorithms, analytics becomes an effective aggregator that can pull historical data and current usage patterns for utilities to help customers forecast their energy consumption. Trilliant’s Analytics as a Service is a powerful tool that gives utilities several ways to positively impact their customers with any type of weather planning.

Analytics as a Service provides accurate forecasts of energy consumption patterns and identifies peak usage times, that helps utilities incentivize customers to reduce their consumption, and manage supply and demand more effectively. From there, customers can plan their budgets more effectively to save money, and even receive personalized recommendations on how to further reduce energy consumption during the winter months from optimizing heating systems, improving home insulation, and using energy-efficient appliances.

No matter what the weather forecast predicts, Trilliant’s Analytics excel in predictive maintenance. It goes beyond analyzing usage to anticipate equipment failures and schedule maintenance proactively, thereby reducing downtime and operational costs.

Frozen utility or power meter during Winter

All of these demand response programs enhance customer experience and enable them to prepare for possible disruptions, manage their bills, find incentives to adjust their usage, and receive quicker restoration during unplanned downtimes.

Another great capability of Trilliant’s Analytics as a Service is Non-Technical Losses (NTL) and Fraud Detection that identifies anomalies indicating energy theft or loss, allowing utilities to take corrective actions, and enhance the utilities security and trust.

By leveraging Analytics as a Service, utilities can empower their customers with the tools and information they need to manage their energy usage more effectively during the winter months, leading to cost savings and improved satisfaction.

Municipal and Cooperative Utilities Embrace the Smart Metering Evolution

By Greg Myers
Global Vice President, Product Management

Uplevel Your Utility with the Proven Benefits of AMI

While Automated Meter Reading (AMR) has served us well, transitioning to more advanced technologies is akin to moving from paper maps to GPS navigation. It’s about embracing efficiency and accuracy for the future. Within the U.S., municipal and cooperative utilities, which together make up approximately 35% of all utilities, are pivotal to delivering reliable and affordable electricity to the communities they serve.

As the energy sector continues to undergo significant transformation, the shift from AMR to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is accelerating. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA), overall AMI penetration has reached 80%, with 130.6 million smart electric meters in the U.S.

Electric cooperatives using AMI meters now outnumber those using AMR meters by three to one. In rural and smaller communities, AMI is essential for solving communication issues between meters and utilities affordably.

Municipal utilities transitioning from AMR to AMI are leveraging advanced meter capabilities to address challenges like power outages, reliable reporting, and demand response.

For those electric utilities who have yet to upgrade to smart meters and face unique challenges such as limited resource management and the need for efficient operations, Trilliant’s edge-ready, scalable AMI solutions offer essential flexibility, reliability, and security. Our device-independent head-end system integrates seamlessly with any meter, device, or application. With over 40 million smart meters deployed and in progress worldwide, we understand the needs of today’s utilities and can easily scale to meet the unique requirements of cooperatives and municipalities.

Is your utility ready for the next wave of smart metering?

Electricity demand is increasing due to supply and price fluctuations, weather patterns, aging infrastructure, growing needs such as large data centers and factories, and other industrial activity.

Utilities can use analytics programs to optimize operations and help customers manage energy usage. Trilliant’s Analytics as a Service provides accurate consumption forecasts, identifies peak usage times, and offers personalized recommendations to reduce winter energy consumption.

The service also excels in predictive maintenance, reducing downtime and costs, and detects energy theft or loss, enhancing security. By leveraging these tools, utilities empower customers to save money and improve satisfaction.

Discover how Trilliant can help future-proof your utility with next-generation AMI, which is core to our Power of Choice value proposition.
