The Communications Hub Interoperability Group is an alliance built to provide a simple yet  cost effective way for UK utilities to adopt smart metering; to expedite the benefits of money saving energy management technology to consumers and to support DECC in their drive forward of the National Smart Metering roll out.  The benefits of deploying interoperable products will be manifold for utilities, government and consumers – lower product and system development costs; introduction of consumer choice and less complex business processes.

Including GEO, nine industry players and in-home display providers have come together within Trilliant’s Interoperability Group, which utilises smart energy standards developed by Zigbee and the Smart Specification Working Group (SSWG).

The Government has identified smart meters as a key energy efficiency technology and is aiming for 52 million smart meters to be installed in 30 million homes and businesses in the UK between 2014 and 2019. The scale of this roll-out demands collaboration to ensure fast and efficient implementation.

Recent research commissioned by the European Smart Metering Industry Group found that UK households have the potential to achieve annual savings of £938 million a year by measuring and managing their electricity use using smart meters.  One of the key barriers to this roll out is the technical complexity of the multiple energy management devices on the market.  By unifying these manufacturers, Trilliant is aiming to limit the time and expense of separate standalone equipment roll-outs, and provide a simpler, more robust offering for utilities.

The Interoperability Group is built around the Trilliant Communications Hub, which is the first generally available hub designed to support the initial deployment stage of smart meters and the first to address issues of multi-supplier and multi-device interoperability from the ground up.  It is already being delivered through a partnership between Trilliant and one of the ‘big six’ UK utility companies.

Trilliant listened to regulators and utilities and developed a product to create simplified demand response for its customers. Markets such as Ontario, Canada, where time-of-use pricing is widely deployed, will greatly benefit from a solution such as this. Many utilities consider time-of-use billing a critical business benefit of a smarter energy grid because it allows them to delay the construction of power generation and distribution infrastructure, resulting in lower environmental impact, more reliable service and lower capital expenditures.

The product has integrated industry standard HAN security into a utility grade multi-tier network and provides built-in privacy enhancements. 

Built on Trilliant’s UnitySuite DSM Enterprise Software and run across Trilliant’s SecureMesh network, the solutions leverage Trilliant’s DDX technology, which has previously been used to give Trilliant scalability in metering applications through distributed intelligence in the millions of meter nodes deployed at customers’ homes.  With this new solution, Trilliant has extended the use of the distributed intelligence of DDX technology to provide that same scalability, real-time alarms and efficient use of communications resources. 

In related news, Trilliant also announced today that a robust ecosystem of industry leaders have joined to deliver interoperable energy awareness devices for utilities to more quickly bring the benefits of smart metering to consumers.  MultiSpeak is a specification that defines standardized interfaces among software applications commonly used by electric utilities. It defines details of data that need to be exchanged between software applications in order to support different processes commonly applied at utilities.

Trilliant has been selected by PowerStream to provide Unit Smart Meter System and Services for residential, and commercial and industrial (C&I) use. For PowerStream, smart meters are an important area of focus given that they form the backbone of the utility’s Smart Grid infrastructure.

Unit Smart metering involves measuring the energy use of individual suites in multi-occupant buildings. This allows unit owners to be accountable for their own utility use and costs, benefiting the
owner, building and distribution system as a whole.

“In part, PowerStream’s growth and success over the past four years has been because of our efforts associated with smart metering and intelligent energy deployment,” said Edward Chatten, PowerStream’s senior vice president Smart Grid & Strategic Support.  “Trilliant has played a strategic and technological role in helping PowerStream deploy our smart meter solutions.  By extending our relationship with Trilliant, we expect to continue to provide our customers with cost-effective and environmentally responsible means for managing their electricity services.”

In 2007, as part of the culture of conservation, the government of Ontario mandated that all utilities in the province convert customers to time-of-use billing, which allows for different electricity rates at different times of day.  Time-of-use billing encourages customers to use power outside peak hours when possible, which can reduce the need to construct additional power generation and distribution infrastructure. In 2010, the regulator set aggressive targets for all utilities in Ontario to complete their TOU rollout.

Many utilities consider time-of-use billing to be a critical business benefit of the smarter energy grid because it allows them to delay the construction of power generation and distribution infrastructure, resulting in lower environmental impact, more reliable service, and lower capital expenditures.  Time-of-use billing is much more challenging to implement than simple meter reading – it requires high reliability, high bandwidth, and sophisticated communications networks.  Trilliant provided this communications network to Hydro One.

The Ontario Energy Board, in this report, shows that Hydro One converted more customers to time-of-use billing than any other utility covered in the program. Hydro One has one of the most difficult terrains in North America for a smart grid, going from very sparse rural areas to densely populated areas. Using Trilliant’s standards-based 2.4 GHz wireless mesh smart grid network, Hydro One was able to cover this difficult terrain and provide the benefits of the smart grid for its customers and the province.

“We felt strongly that the combination of HD Supply Utilities’ installation services and Trilliant’s multi-tiered SecureMesh technology would provide Victoria Electric Coop with a robust, high speed, low latency communications network that will serve as our Smart Grid foundation and meet AMI objectives,” according to Blaine Warzecha, General Manager at Victoria Electric Cooperative.  “Equally significant is the fact that we are implementing a solution that can grow to meet our future needs.”

Victoria Electric’s pilot program will be a 90-day test phase to designated locations in their service area.  A successful implementation could mean a full rollout to their entire service territory.    Initial applications will be to improve operational efficiency, provide interval data for Critical Peak Pricing (CPP) and Time-of-Use (TOU) rates, and enhance outage detection.

A key component in HD Supply Utilities’ GridAdvance™ integrated, end-to-end Smart Grid solution, Trilliant’s SecureMesh multi-tier architecture enables the two-way flow of data to integrate the utility’s head-end systems with distribution, smart metering, and home devices. These sections of the grid correspond to communication tiers: a Wide Area Network (WAN) tier, which connects distribution devices and aggregates the Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) tier, which connects meters and aggregates the Home Area Network (HAN) tier, which connects in-home devices.
