Trilliant Raises $106 Million of Capital

Trilliant Incorporated, a leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations, and renewable resource integration, today announced that it has closed financing totaling $106 million from a global syndicate of industry and financial leaders.

The financing round was led by two highly-respected financial investors, Investor Growth Capital (the wholly-owned venture arm of Investor AB of Sweden) and VantagePoint Venture Partners and two leading global grid-related equipment companies, ABB and GE. The financing, which was coordinated by Deutsche Bank, also includes a significant credit facility from a major venture credit provider as well as continuing financial support from existing investors MissionPoint Capital Partners and zouk ventures. The new investment will be used to finance Trilliant’s continued growth in North America and globally.

“Our new investors represent some of the largest and most trusted companies in the utility industry,” according to Andy White, president and CEO of Trilliant. “Their combined industry experience, financial strength, and global footprint will provide us with the resources to expand our Smart Grid solutions across North America and to a global marketplace. The strength and caliber of our partners will give current and future customers confidence that they have chosen a long-term market leader.”

Trilliant provides utilities around the world with comprehensive, secure, standards-based, and real-time Smart Grid communication network solutions. Trilliant has over 200 utility customers, including Hydro One in Ontario, Canada. Hydro One has deployed Trilliant smart communications to over 1.1 million customers in support of the largest operating time-of-use billing program in the world. Trilliant’s multi-tier architecture, which connects utility distribution, metering, and consumer energy management devices, remains the industry’s only fully integrated end-to-end Smart Grid solution.

Central Maine Power Proceeds with Trilliant for Smart Grid Communications Network

Trilliant Incorporated, a leader in delivering Smart Grid solutions that enhance energy efficiency, utility operations and renewable resource integration, today announced that it has completed agreements with Central Maine Power (CMP) to provide a complete Smart Grid communications network and advanced meter infrastructure solution. The company will install smart meters for all of its 620,000 residential, commercial, and industrial customer accounts beginning later this summer.

The Smart Grid deployment will use Trilliant’s SecureMesh™ communications network to provide a comprehensive high-bandwidth private Wide Area Network (WAN) and Neighborhood Area Network (NAN) that interconnects meters and other Smart Grid-enabled devices to enable consumer energy management. Trilliant’s UnitySuite™ head-end software will be used to manage the Smart Grid network. Other services include prime supply of electric meters, network design and installation services, software integration, and project management.

Trilliant partnered with leading companies to bring a best-in-class solution to the Maine project. General Electric (GE) and Landis+Gyr are providing electric meters and IBM is providing Tivoli Netcool software integrated with UnitySuite applications for robust and scalable service management of Iberdrola’s Smart Grid communications infrastructure.

CMP is part of Iberdrola USA, a group of companies serving nearly 3 million gas and electric customers in five northeastern states. CMP was awarded $96M under the Smart Grid Investment Grant program of the U.S. Department of Energy authorized under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. CMP’s service area encompasses roughly the southern third of the state, but accounts for nearly 80% of consumer sales of electricity in Maine. Matching funding from the corporation will bring the total investment to nearly $200M.

“We have ambitious goals to improve our service and deliver value for customers through our Smart Grid network,” said Sara Burns, CMP president and chief executive officer. “Trilliant provided the right combination of communication and metering technology to suit our needs.”

“We are thrilled to be working with a company that is part of one of the world’s largest global utilities on this leading project,” said Andy White, President and CEO of Trilliant. “Central Maine Power has an aggressive schedule, challenging terrain, and strong value commitments to their customers and shareholders. Trilliant was uniquely capable of providing not only a proven and cost-effective solution, but a future-proof Smart Grid communications network with the bandwidth and speed to improve customer service, distribution automation, and consumer energy efficiency over the long term.”

The Maine project is Iberdrola’s first Smart Grid project in the U.S. CMP expects to complete the installations by early 2012. The system will improve the company’s operations and customer service. It will also enable electricity supply companies and Maine regulators to work toward creating new benefits for consumers such as flexible rate schedules, lower energy costs, and peak demand load-shifting and load-shedding programs.
