Oshawa Power is a regulated electricity distribution company, dedicated to delivering a safe and reliable supply of electricity to more than 61,000 homes and businesses across Oshawa, Ontario. Through its suite metering program, the utility provides each unit within residential and commercial buildings with their own separate meter. Residents are only required to pay for the electricity used in their unit as opposed to a monthly flat rate to their building. This encourages customers’ individual conservation efforts, while allowing them to directly control their hydro costs.

“Our suite metering program provides occupants of multi-unit buildings with the ability to minimize costs and take control of their energy efficiency — two things we know customers are eager to do,” said Daniel Arbour, President and CEO, Oshawa Power. “Our partnership with Trilliant allows us to leverage their expertise and knowledge to ensure we’re providing the best possible service to our customers. We’re proud to continue to grow our program, supporting building owners, condominium boards and residents with the ability to better manage their energy use.”

“We’re excited to support Oshawa Power as it focuses on enabling customers to better manage and take control of their energy use,” said Steven Lupo, Managing Director, Canada and U.S. at Trilliant. “Our expertise, reliable services and unique, scalable solutions provide utilities with a way to implement suite metering efficiently, while increasing their access to valuable data to improve their offerings. Oshawa Power is a notable example of a forward-thinking energy organization that is leveraging the right technology to meet its customers’ requirements and encourage energy conservation.”

Secure Sub-metering Platform for New Buildings and Retrofit Projects

This partnership comes at a pivotal time as utilities prioritize their participation in grid modernization, carbon footprint reduction, electrification, and other energy transition initiatives across Canada.

Trilliant’s Smart Building platform is specifically designed to support a variety of energy, industrial and municipal applications worldwide. The scalable and secure platform is managed by Trilliant’s UnitySuite® head-end system (HES) software, which can integrate multiple metering commodity types, provide data acquisition and management, enhanced analytics, and energy insights.

Additionally, Trilliant’s platform easily expands to support a host of current and future IoT applications including flood and leak detection, energy monitoring, and lighting controls — all on one common user interface and experience.

Trilliant offers scalable, secure wireless technology which allows for the implementation of sub-metering quickly and efficiently in new buildings and retrofit projects. This offering replaces wired meters and cables — which can be expensive and time-consuming to install and troubleshoot — with a wireless sub-metering solution that tracks tenants’ consumption in near real time, while analyzing a building’s energy performance to pinpoint problems or areas of improvement.

Acting as a data scientist for utilities worldwide, Analytics as a Service supports their ability to fully leverage collected data — saving time, reducing energy losses and protecting their revenue

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — Enlit Asia 2024 — October 8, 2024 – Trilliant, a leading international provider of solutions for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid, smart cities and IIoT, today introduced Analytics as a Service, a new offering that enables utilities worldwide to further leverage data by providing deeper insights and understanding of that data. With Analytics as a Service from Trilliant, information gathered from data collection tools is deeply analyzed to enable forecasting, increase the management of resources, better predict outcomes, and more. This improved analysis leads to greater automation of processes, enhanced decision-making, and reduced energy loss, among other benefits.

Analytics as a Service is a subscription-based, cloud-independent platform comprising all of Trilliant’s analytical AI and machine learning offerings. Acting as a data scientist, Analytics as a Service complements and augments the capabilities of data sources, such as Trilliant’s Prime Energy Suite, the company’s multi-protocol, multi-network software suite for data management; Trilliant’s Unity Suite® Head End System (HES) software platform; or other third-party tools. Data models and results from these source applications are consumed in Analytics as a Service, transforming them into information that supports intelligent decision-making and actions.

“Data is one of the most valuable assets for utilities, but many are unable to take full advantage of it due to limited resources,” said Greg Myers, Global Vice President, Product Management at Trilliant. “We know customers are facing many challenges as they look to improve the customer experience, optimize the grid, and more, and they have been looking for a way to better use data sources. With Analytics as a Service, utilities have the ability to more accurately collect information and use it to automate models and forecasting, saving them time and improving decision-making. Additionally, customers are not limited by any existing tools they have in place, or their environment. With the Power of Choice, they’re free to leverage Analytics as a Service in the way that works best for them.”

Trilliant’s Analytics as a Service in Action – Non-Technical Loss Detection
In the case of a utility that wants to improve its Non-Technical Loss (NTL) detection, Analytics as a Service can be deployed to routinely pull data from any data source – such as Trilliant’s own Prime Energy Suite databases or third-party software – providing a more accurate and detailed analysis.

NTL analytics identifies premises with a high probability of energy theft or loss at the source, throughout a utility’s entire service territory. It operates on the principle that tampered or misconfigured meters record anomalies in voltages and energy (power) readings. Data from smart meters provide the necessary information for the NTL analytics engine to identify the location of each meter that’s exhibiting anomalous behavior, enabling utilities to visit the addresses to verify and remediate the theft. Based on the accumulated data, Analytics as a Service will automatically update and execute the NTL model from the previous day. The model’s results would then be published, via an API, to be consumed by Prime Energy Suite, or another third-party system. With Analytics as a Service, the model outcomes can be visualized in any business intelligence (BI) tool with no additional infrastructure required.

One utility located in the Caribbean recently piloted Trilliant’s Analytics as a Service in an effort to improve the accuracy of its data for NTL. Its goal was to reduce energy losses and protect revenue by identifying meters which were very likely to be the source of NTL, avoiding false positives and unnecessary on-site inspections. With Analytics as a Service, the utility was able to capture more precise information, thereby enhancing its models. Specifically, the model demonstrated the ability to classify the company’s customers with high and low NTL risk using hourly active energy and voltage meter readings. Additionally, Trilliant was able to validate the results against a list of identified irregular accounts. Analytics as a Service achieved an average accuracy of approximately 80 per cent, a drastic increase in accuracy compared with other solutions in the market.

While Analytics as a Service is cloud-based and can be deployed on any cloud platform including Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, it can also be hosted and managed on-premises – a model currently deployed by an electrical authority in Asia.

See Analytics as a Service first-hand: Trilliant will highlight Analytics as a Service at Enlit Asia 2024 through demos and presentations.

On October 8, join him for a Knowledge Hub presentation at 2:20 p.m.: Use of Advanced Analytics to Address Current Challenges in Power Utilities – Focus on Non-technical Loss Detection

Toronto, ON — September 30, 2024 – Trilliant, a leading international provider of solutions for advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), smart grid, smart cities and IIoT, has announced a new partnership with Milton Hydro Services Inc. (MHSI), a subsidiary of Milton Hydro Holdings Inc. in Ontario, Canada. MHSI empowers its customers through innovative energy management services and solutions now and throughout the energy transition.

The agreement marks the inception of a community-wide sub-metering program powered by Trilliant’s Smart Building platform to provide an enhanced customer experience and energy savings opportunities.

Sub-metering is an energy management solution for multi-tenant buildings where each unit is individually metered. As a result, customers only pay for their own energy usage and can benefit from their individual conservation efforts. Property managers also benefit through more predictable electricity costs for common areas, lower operating expenses, and reduced maintenance fees.

Sub-metering is proven to promote energy efficiency in multi-tenant environments, with the average reduction in electricity usage after implementation estimated to be up to 40 per cent.

MHSI will leverage Trilliant’s turnkey design engineering, logistics, project management, and professional data and field services to deliver the solution to its customers.

As the industry leader in sub-metering solutions, Trilliant employs both wired and wireless sub-metering solutions within residential and commercial multi-unit buildings to optimize assets, reduce risk, and maximize performance.

“We believe in empowering our customers to manage and control their utility costs through increased access to energy efficient products and services,” said Jason Edwards, Vice President at MHSI. “We’re excited to leverage Trilliant’s global expertise to increase energy conservation and optimization opportunities across all markets.”

“Sub-metering allows for a vital connection between consumers and energy service providers, building a culture of conservation while adding the ability to take part directly in saving energy and other exciting initiatives,” said Steven Lupo, Managing Director, Canada and USA for Trilliant. “Together with Trilliant, Milton Hydro was first to spearhead the adoption of wireless AMI metering in Canada. This partnership marks a significant milestone for Milton to once again lead the utility market with innovative products and services that deliver definitive value to their customers. We’re delighted to support Milton as it introduces this meaningful program to customers.”

Secure sub-metering platform for new buildings and retrofit projects

Trilliant’s Smart Buildings platform is specifically designed to support a variety of energy, industrial, and municipal applications worldwide. The scalable and secure platform is managed by Trilliant’s UnitySuite® software, which provides comprehensive data management, analytics, and outcomes, and is capable of integrating with electric, water, and thermal metering devices. Further, the platform easily expands to support a host of current and future IoT applications and sensors including leak detection, air quality sensors, and lighting controls — all on one common user interface and experience.
